Holiday Quick Tip: The Hostess Gift

As I type this I am whisking across the country on a holiday road trip.  It is the best family road trip I have ever taken.  Apart from a couple of expected tangles, everyone has gotten along swimmingly and stayed entertained.  We stowed the luggage outside of the vehicle in a cargo carrier so everyone has plenty of room.

I didn't want to miss a single holiday post, so I thought I would drop this little useful nugget on you... hostess gifts.  Here's the rule of thumb, always bring a gift... even if they say do not bring a gift.  It is the good manners and the right thing to do.  Always.

So now, what to bring.  Of course, you could always bring the predictable wine or flowers.  The only comment I would make here is that you mustn't be distressed if the hostess doesn't put the flowers out or use your wine.  It may not complement their party plans.  Instead, you might consider something that will be enjoyed by the hostess long after the last of the champagne is poured.

My favorite thing to bring for the hostess is a breakfast basket for the following morning.  The hostess will probably be very tired and may have much cleaning up to do.  A basket full of quick and easy breakfast items will get them off on the right foot.

Here is a quick list of things you might consider for your basket:

  • Muffins
  • Biscuits
  • Scones
  • Cinnamon rolls
  • Coffee
  • Tea bags
  • Hot cocoa mix
  • Fresh fruit
  • Waffle mix and toppings
  • Small quiches
  • Gift card to a local breakfast place
  • Bagels and cream cheese
  • Scratch off lottery ticket (I just like to include them for fun)
