Surviving Summer: Fun Activities

By this point in the summer, restlessness may have already set in around your home. If you have kids, you are sure to have heard, “I’m bored”. Coming up with new and exciting things to do can be tiresome.  

Today we offer up some fun things to do to survive the summer. Some are kid-driven, but there is plenty here for adults, too. As always, we encourage you to celebrate the simple pleasures of life. Many of the ideas here are very inexpensive or free. They just require a little extra thought or seeing life through the eyes of a child.

SUMMER SURVIVAL IDEAS

  1. Picnic in your backyard.
  2. Buy some disposable cameras and have a photo scavenger hunt.
  3. Buy some crayons and a coloring book.
  4. Build a fort in the living room.
  5. Stroll down memory lane with photos and yearbooks.
  6. Make a root beer float.
  7. Have a movie day… at home or at the theater.
  8. Bake some cupcakes and deliver them to friends and family.
  9. Write a poem… story… song.
  10. Make lemonade.
  11. Run a lemonade stand.
  12. Plan a vacation you want to take next summer.
  13. Plant flowers in your yard.
  14. Learn a foreign language.
  15. Take your dog for a walk.
  16. Give your dog a bath.
  17. Give your car a bath.
  18. Volunteer at the local animal shelter.
  19. Splash around in a plastic kiddy pool.
  20. Have a water balloon war.
  21. Draw a self-portrait.
  22. Run around in the sprinklers.
  23. Go to a museum.
  24. Jump in the pool with your clothes on.
  25. Go camping in your backyard… or living room.
  26. Fly a kite.
  27. Make sangria.
  28. Go bowling.
  29. Read aloud with your kids.
  30. Go fishing.
  31. Go to the library.
  32. Catch fireflies in a jar.
  33. Make a play or ‘TV show’.
  34. Go to a county fair.
  35. Have a yard sale.
  36. Watch the sunrise… and set.
